Sunday Poetry: May We Seek a Vision

Welcome to Sunday Poetry. If this is your first visit you can read about the purpose and inspiration of my Sunday poetry blogs here.

I stumbled on today’s poem while searching for a poem on another topic, and was struck how appropriate this one is as we head toward a presidential election.  A Prayer Among Friends by John Daniel is not about partisan politics, but about the qualities we need to be good citizens and voters.  Among the strident rhetoric, I found this peaceful, reassuring, calming.  I hope you find the same magic here.

Remember, we read poetry together here for the pure pleasure of the experience. There are no quizzes, no right ways to read or contemplate the poem we share. Absolutely no dissecting allowed. Just come along for the “read.” What line, word or thought will you carry with you this week? If you’d like to tell us where the poem took you? We’ll listen.

Remember, too, there is a special giveaway in progress for those who comment on any Sunday Poetry blog before year’s end.  The prize is an autographed copy of Billy Collins’s Horoscopes for the Dead. See the details here. I’ve carried this precious autographed book from New York to Virginia, on to North Carolina, and now to Florida. It’s waiting for someone to claim it.

Will it be you?

This is JUST what I needed this morning. Thanks for highlighting it. The sentiment is a goal for me to work towards. Again, thank you and John Daniel.

Why can I not see the poem?

Because most of the poetry I use is still under copyright, I link to it on sites that have permission to publish It. Just click on the words that are highlighted, usually the poem’s title, and that link will take you to the poem. Poets are often the victims of websites who take and publish their works without permission, and I am careful not to be one of them.
