Sunday Inspiration: Sometimes Our Light Goes Out

canvasThis month I’m using the image of light in my Sunday Inspirations to introduce my new novel The Color of Light.

These words by Albert Schweitzer have long been a favorite of mine. Sometimes our light does goes out, and no one could give a greater gift than to blow it back into flame.

In The Color of Light a family fallen on hard times is given a helping hand by a woman of deep compassion. But the Reverend Analiese Wagner finds many obstacles in the way, and the light she offers — as well as the light within her — is almost extinguished. Unexpectedly an old acquaintance returns to help her find her way through the darkness.

Has someone helped rekindle your flame when your light has gone out? Have you helped someone else do the same? I’m grateful for the times I’ve been helped and the times I’ve been privileged to do the same. You, too?

    Dear Emilie,
You blow the flame back in all of us who read your books. I am reading the Color of Light right now. It is wonderful to get reacquainted with the characters. I often hide my light not knowing it, but I have to remember to let it shine to help people along life’s way. Thank you for the encouragement.

Sometimes it’s hard enough to find that little flame, much less remember to let it shine, isn’t it? I love quotes that help me on my own search.

There are many people who have given me encouragement and inspiration in my life’s journey. While there is not often large things we can do for people, being kind and listening are among the best gifts.
Ten years ago you were one of those who helped me when our son Tim died suddenly.
My best friend, Joan and her autistic son created a treasure chest of little gifts and sent it to give me something to look forward to. Attached to each one was a scripture or a quote about friendship. It was a wonderful thing to do.
I try to read books that are uplifting and find “The Color of Light” wonderful…I love almost all of what you have written such good reads…I try to pase them out so I don’t get to the end too fast!
I agree about grandkids bringing light into our lives…God’s best creation. 🙂

Your friend Joan and her son really understand how to help, and I know it helped them work through their own sadness at your son’s death. Thank you for sharing that here.

i finished The Color of Light last night and I think this is one of your best books, having read many. The struggle to be who we were meant to be and the pluses and minuses of various choices is so very real and apparent in our lives. In addition, what it really means to be Christian and the politics of parishioners was so adeptly written. I think of ” There, but for the a grace of God…” When I think of that homeless family. Thank you so much for such a compelling read.

Thank you, Josephine. I’m so glad you found it meaningful.
