Sunday Inspiration: The American Experiment

The American Experiment

What I would give to see the Broadway smash hit “Hamilton,” the upbeat, hip-hop, show about that great American, Alexander Hamilton.

Lin-Manuel Miranda is the creator and star of the Tony Award winning show that brings to life the struggle to create the American experiment. As we celebrate the birth of our country this week, I thought I would share a portion of Miranda’s commencement speech at the University of Pennsylvania last month, which I believe so well describes the true spirit of our nation.

“I know that many of you made miracles happen to get to this day. I know that parents and grandparents and aunts and uncles and family behind you made miracles happen to be here…Your stories are essential. Don’t believe me?

“In a year when politicians traffic in anti-immigrant rhetoric, there is also a Broadway musical reminding us that a broke, orphan immigrant from the West Indies built our financial system. A story that reminds us that since the beginning of the great unfinished symphony that is our American experiment, time and time again, immigrants get the job done.”

As I watch the fireworks and spend time with family and friends this weekend, I will be celebrating the American experiment that includes all people. Celebrate with me.

We are proud to have seen HAMILTON
on June 8❤️???! It is truly phenomenal,
    Magnificent, and spectacular!
Mr. Miranda’s words at the Penn graduation and in Hamilton should make us remember our forefathers
who worked hard to make America great. As you said, Emilie. God bless America!?

    Emile,
Hamilton did NOT win an Oscar. It won a TONY. Oscars are for movies – Tonys are for theatre. I don’t like to correct learned authors, but thought I should this time.
