Sunday Inspiration: You go girls!

you go girls

“My message to young girls is that you can do much more than you ever can imagine. The only way you can imagine it is to do it. To take the first step. And if you take the first step, you can then take three steps. And then you can take 10. And someday maybe you can run a marathon. And if you can run a marathon, you can do anything.” -Kathrine Switzer

Did you see the news this week about Kathrine Switzer running the Boston Marathon — again?

Kathrine was the first woman to officially run in the Boston Marathon, though as you have probably seen in the iconic photo, a grumpy official tried to physically pull her out of that race until Kathrine’s muscular boyfriend bumped him out instead.

That was in 1967 when she was only 20 years old, and since then Kathrine has run 39 marathons, and this one was her fastest in 43 years. Congratulations to her on this incredible feat.

I’m a walker, not a runner, but I hope her words will be heeded by every girl and every woman in whatever they do: “The only way you can imagine it is to do it.”

I’m not much of a runner but I’m trying!

I’ve learned you don’t have to be young to accomplish things you want to do. Having led a sedentary life forever, I began doing Cross Fit in my early sixties. What a laugh, as I was falling all over myself and got very winded, but I proved to myself after determining I wasn’t going to give up that I could do it. After a year and a half, I lost 35 lbs and could dead lift 165 lbs. So, anybody can follow their dream and accomplish whatever it may be no matter their age.

Congratulations, Nancy! You are really an inspiration for all but especially for me as I am in my late sixties and battling some health issues I am trying to overcome. I often felt like it was too late, but you make me believe it is not!
