Sunday Inspiration: Happy Couples

Happy Couples

As you may know by now, I’m fascinated about what makes good relationships, not just personally but professionally, since I like to write about how people overcome obstacles in their relationships.

I ran across an article recently that added to my wisdom, and I wanted to share it with you. Happy Couples Focus On Each Other’s Strengths follows a study that shows when couples support each other’s three strongest characteristics —  instead of harping on their weaknesses — their relationship in terms of emotional intimacy and sexual satisfaction improves significantly. That seems like a no-brainer, doesn’t it?

I like to think of these strengths as superpowers — maybe because it’s the 20th anniversary of Harry Potter. I believe we all have at least three superpowers, and it’s important to know what yours are and to make sure your significant other knows what they are as well — and that you know what your significant others is and will frequently compliment him/her on them. Happy Couples R Us, right?

I — like many others — am shy about touting my superpowers and all too willing to share my weaknesses. But I would like to change that by stating right here, right now that…

My three superpowers are:

Creativity — that’s why I enjoy writing so much.

Intelligence — I love to learn, which to me is a sign of intelligence.

Compassion — it breaks my heart to see others in pain.

So what are your three superpowers? And what are the three superpowers of your mate? Do you think this really makes for happy couples? Why not sit down and share your superpower with each other and see what happens?

    I think my superpowers are:

Trustworthy – If I say I’m going to do something you can count on me to do it.

Thrifty – I try to spend money wisely and to avoid debt.

Compassionate – If someone’s in need or experiencing some trial, I’ll try to do what I can to ease their pain. I hate suffering.

    My mate’s superpowers:

Forgiving – He’s the first one to put bad feelings behind him and move on.

Loving – He’s attentive to my needs and does whatever he can to keep me comfortable and happy.

Adaptable – He is always willing to change on a whim in order to accommodate me.

These are the strengths that have kept our marriage bond strong and successful. Of course life can rattle us and throw us off balance sometimes, but when we demonstrate these characteristics, we readily get back on track. We also balance each other because we are very different in certain ways.

WeAll have super powers in one form or another,Nancy! Perhaps you are great at ….. cook…sewing….calling someone who needs a hello, gardening…even writing a little note to someone, or giving the person in line in front of you or behind you a smile, and that may be the only one they get all day, or saying hello to the next person you pass by….Super
Powers do not have to be earth shattering, buy slow and steady. I bet a nickle you can think of something!
I bet you have some and just don’t realize it!

I think my three superpowers are: 1. Intelligence-I love learning new things and I love reading, so that’s where I learn a great deal, I believe. 2. Strength-I’ve discovered from having to deal with incredible health issues these past few years that I am much stronger than I ever realized. 3. Compassionate-I care deeply about many people and things and will often go out of my way to show it.
