Sunday Inspiration: Vote With Your Fork

Eat food

Not too much

Mostly plants

— Michael Pollan

The theme of last week — the last of the  Chautauqua season — was one of my favorite subjects: food.

“At the Table: Our Changing Relationship With Food” had fascinating lectures, a food festival every day, and inspiring revelations about how to eat better.

Here are some of my takeaways:

  • Appreciate the food you eat by enjoying it, savoring it, cooking it, eating with family and friends, and treating it as the miraculous blessing it is.
  • Eat food that is good for you and the planet by eating less meat and more fruit and vegetables, especially organic.
  • Support your local farmers by shopping at farmers markets.
  • Vote with your fork by choosing food that will make this a better world (I’m still boycotting Wendy’s because they refuse to pay a penny a pound more for their tomatoes, which would benefit underpaid farm workers).

I know this isn’t easy. I’m a food sinner myself, but this week has motivated me to eat better — and Proman is all in favor. We’re going to start with a minimum of two vegetarian dinners a week, fewer deserts and snacks, and more trips to our local farmers market.

Are you with me?

That’s a good goal. I think I’ll try one similar.

I’m with you Emilie. I, too, have “food sins.” But my
rationalization is that we eat veggie meals most of the time, the exception being fish and chicken usually once a week each. I can’t remember the last time we had red meat. Moderation is my motto so we have our main meal at lunch time and I try not to eat after 6 pm (of course there are exceptions). I sleep much better with that routine. When we eat out, I usually bring half of my meal home. Hopefully things even out over time. Thanks for the boost needed to continue to eat healthy.

I know we should all be eating “clean” as this is, but I’m a sugar addict and I really need to get off it. I hope you’re going to post some tasty recipes so I can change my eating habits and that of my hubby’s too! Thanks, Emilie!
