Sunday Inspiration: Feeling with the heart of another

EmpathyEmpathy is

seeing with the eyes of another,

listening with the ears of another,

and feeling with the heart of another.

-A Place for Mom

As we move into the holiday season, I’m reflecting on what it means to be a spiritual and religious person. Perhaps most important of all? To be able to feel empathy for others.

Empathy doesn’t just happen; it’s a skill that must be learned. There are so many ways to encourage empathy, but here’s a blog with some creative ideas.

I love the idea that reading with our children and talking with them about what they read can be key. Stories widen our world and open our minds to new possibilities. Not only do we teach one of the most vital of human skills, the ability to read, but also the ability to feel with the heart of another.

The holidays are upon us. May this be a season of empathy for all.

You are spot-on, empathy needs to be encouraged every chance we get. I was visiting a friend in a nursing home rehab yesterday, who will never be the same mentally. As I spoke with the young woman taking care of her, I thanked her for her kindness. She replied, “I look at it this way – that could be me. And I would want the same treatment.”

Empathy was in our pastor’s homily this week. This is something we all should have, no only during the holiday season, but always. ☺

Yes Emilie exactly. Drying my tears as I write.
