Wedding Ring “Quilt Along With” Giveaway

Quilt Along with Emilie Richards Wedding RingI love the approach of a book launch, even when the book was well and truly launched almost nine years ago. Now Wedding Ring, the first book of the Shenandoah Album series, is about to be re-launched on March 26th,  in a new format and with a brand new cover.

Recently I blogged about the way Wedding Ring and eventually, the entire Shenandoah Album series came about. When I began, I had no idea that a series would be born, or that Leisure Arts, a leading craft publisher, would be interested in creating pattern books based on the quilts mentioned in each of  the novels in the series.

I was skeptical when I heard about the offer. Leisure Arts likes to call their books “leaflets” and I had a vision of a page that opened like a map, with a few diagrams and a list of materials. Little did I know that they would be creating a softcover book, with quotes from my novels, breathtaking original and traditional patterns to match my descriptions, and beautifully rendered photographs. I was so thrilled when I saw the finished product. May I say that authors are NOT always thrilled with finished products, but this time, I certainly was.

Wedding Ring rerelease

Now Mira Books, my publisher, is reissuing Wedding Ring, and to celebrate I’ll be doing a pattern book giveaway to go with it. Read on.

How much do the Shenandoah Album books have to do with quilts, quilting, quilters? If you’re not a fan of any of those things, then the question is relevant. Might you enjoy the series anyway?

First and foremost each of the novels is about women, their lives, their relationships, the issues they confront, their joys and their sorrows. Sound familiar? Yes, they’re like my other novels, only this time wrapped in the comfort and beauty of quilts.

Wedding Ring uses an old tattered quilt as a metaphor for marriage.

In the second book, Endless Chain, a major character is befriended by a church quilt group who teaches her to quilt. The quilt pattern she chooses is symbolic of her own dramatic life story.

In the third, Lover’s Knot, a man inherits a quilt that might reveal the secrets of his family, a family he’s never known, but only if he allows his estranged wife to follow the clues.

The fourth, Touching Stars, is about the single mom proprietor of a B&B who uses star quilts to adorn her inn.

The fifth, Sister’s Choice, features a quilt that was given by one sister to another to help her see her destiny, and a new generation whose own destiny is in question.

Intrigued, quilter or not?  I hope so.

To celebrate the return of the first three novels in the series to print, I’ll be giving away autographed copies of the matching pattern books, four patterns books for each novel, one per week. To qualify for the pattern book giveaway, just comment on this blog or any of the blogs under the category Shenandoah Album Series on the right, and tell us why you like quilts, or what you like about them, or even why you don’t like them.

If you don’t quilt and don’t need the pattern book for yourself, your local quilt guild, museum or charity will be thrilled to have it, as would any friend who quilts or even your local library.

Here are the details:  Only one comment per person will be entered. You must have a North American address to qualify. (Sadly the pattern books are too heavy to send overseas.) Your entry will remain valid for the entire length of the contest or until you win a book. The first pattern book will be given away next Tuesday.

So let us hear from you by commenting. I’m looking forward to it.

  2. Joni Everson on March 19, 2013 at 10:21 am

Shenandoah series – I loved the series and the matching patterns withe the books – I actually made my grandson a quilt from your Sisters choice out of primary colors !

    • Emilie Richards on March 19, 2013 at 10:31 am

I would love to see a photo of the quilt. I want to use that pattern for my granddaughters.

  3. Darlene George on March 19, 2013 at 10:23 am

I love the Shenandoah Album Series!! I love the way you get right to the heart of women and the area and combine that with a quilt pattern. I cannot tell you how many times I’ve reread “The Wedding Ring”. The interaction between mother, daughter and grandmother is so wonderful it makes me wish mine were still alive so that we could quilt together!!!!

    • Emilie Richards on March 19, 2013 at 10:30 am

That was one of my favorite books to write. I’m so glad you’ve continued to enjoy it.

  4. Lori Halfhide on March 19, 2013 at 10:26 am

I love quilts. I remember two of my great grandmothers telling me about their quilts and showing me. My Great Grandma Bland made me several 4 and 9 patch quilts that I still have. I can look at them and remember fondly that this square was a remnant from a shirt she made for my grandma or mom or part of a little dress I used to have. Each stitch was put there with love. When I get to missing Grandma Bland I get one of her quilts out and I feel like she’s right there with me.

    • Emilie Richards on March 19, 2013 at 10:30 am

What a wonderful heirloom, the very best kind.

  5. Evelyn Ferguson on March 19, 2013 at 10:51 am

Receiving from and giving quilts show the love. Quilting can bring a community of women together whether it is a guild or a group of friends. It strengthens the bond of friendship. The Shendoah Album series highlights this.

  6. Becky on March 19, 2013 at 11:39 am

I love this series I am a wannabe quilter and love quilts. This series is so much more than the quilts the women will grab your heart.

    • Emilie Richards on March 19, 2013 at 11:45 am

And maybe you’ll find a quilt to start you on the quilting road if you win one of the pattern books.

  7. Connie Wood on March 19, 2013 at 11:40 am

I love the Shenendoah Album series and all your other books as well. Would love to win this quilt book. always wanted to make a Wedding Ring quilt but thought it too hard for my level of quilting skills. If I win, I will make it no matter what 😉

  8. Marie Atkinson on March 19, 2013 at 11:48 am

I am a fourth generation quilter. Quilts have been in my home all my life but the ones from my childhood were very heavy. I started quilting in 1990 and have been a quilter ever since. I make light weight quilts and love the feeling of cuddling with them. I love stories where quilts are involved bringing with them tales of friends, family, community.

    • Emilie Richards on March 19, 2013 at 12:39 pm

Lightweight quilts make so much house now with central heating. Still nice and cuddly, too.

  9. Amy R on March 19, 2013 at 12:39 pm

I love your novels. . . and, I love quilting~ What a beautiful combination! Thanks so much for your stories that warm our hearts and give us a loving, learning space to escape to.

I have thought on starting to try and quilt a “real” quilt. I’ve done a Smurf quilt for my daughter when she was littler, and now her littlest has it on her bed. I painted the designs from coloring book pictures with tri-chem paints yearrrs ago, and made a block quilt. Made some others for nieces and nephew and a few other easy peasy ones. Nothing like a real quilt, but I have been contemplating it. I have grandkids I could quilt for and they would love it I’m sure, but I would have to put down my genealogy to do it. Quilts would be a wonderful legacy to leave them. I don’t think this is where I am supposed to enter, but I just ended up “chattering away” which is ok as I never win these things anyway. What a wonderful thing that your “quilting books” has turned into this great venture with Leisure Arts and so many will benefit from your work, both from the books and from the quilt patterns:)

    • Emilie Richards on March 19, 2013 at 12:55 pm

That’s exactly the right place to enter, and with twelve prizes coming up, who knows, right? I loved this and hope you do make a traditional quilt in the future, but your originals sounds wonderful and well loved.

  11. DebbieW on March 19, 2013 at 12:58 pm

I enjoyed reading this series of books and I am a quilter so that made them extra special.

  12. Brenda on March 19, 2013 at 1:03 pm

love reading about where I have lived before!!!!

  13. amyc on March 19, 2013 at 2:44 pm

I love quilting (may not be good at it but that’s okay) and I love to read books that has a setting near my hometown.

  14. Beverly on March 19, 2013 at 4:03 pm

I started my quilting journey about 6 years ago. It has led me to make some wonderful friendships along with my quilts. Working full time makes it hard to spend a lot of time on quilting, but when I can, it just makes my soul happy. I truly appreciate you featuring quilts in your books, and look forward to seeing the new books come out along with the pattern books.

  15. Lorraine Thacker on March 19, 2013 at 5:25 pm

I am not a quilter, although I sew, knit and crochet a little. I just love your style of writing and Wedding Ring is a favorite of mine. My first email to you was about this very story. My mother (estranged for the past 37 yrs.) just passed away March 10th and your words on the difficulties of those relationships still hit home for me. After reading it the first time, I was able to finally let go of the hurt and anger and see the other side of the story a little better. Thank you Emilie.

  16. Wanda on March 19, 2013 at 5:54 pm

I love your novels. Quilting is something that comes to me naturally and via my heritage. Both of my grandmother’s were quilters, though one not as much as the other. I have quilts from both sides of my family and plan to pass them on to my boys and their children. Quilts to me a a hug. They are made with love and give love to others. I think quilts are very important and your books show that love and importance in the stories. They also tie generations together.

  17. Barbara Corbitt on March 19, 2013 at 7:04 pm

I love her books. My daughter gave me the last two a few days before she died in my arms. Those two books were part of my recovery from the pain and depression. I have quilted for forty years. I hand piece and hand quilt. I have made over 200 quilts and given every one of them away to church groups to raffle, cancer awarness and the intensive care neonatal unit at my local hospital. And the rest to friends and family. And like a big dummy i did not keep one for myselfand now dont have the money to buy any fabric. Thanks for great giveaway babscorbitt@gmail.com

    • Emilie Richards on March 19, 2013 at 9:28 pm

Barbara, I’m so glad the books helped, but sorry you’ve had a financial reversal. When you do get fabric, that first quilt should be your own personal keeper. You deserve it, for certain. If you can, join your local freecycle group. We’re in ours, and the idea is for people to keep things they no longer want out of the landfill, so they put notices up for others to take whatever it is. We gave away all our moving boxes that way, wrapping paper, etc. I’ve seen lots of fabric advertised. All you have to do is go and pick it up. You might find something wonderful you could use.

  18. Liz on March 19, 2013 at 10:07 pm

I have an old quilt that I suspect my grandmother made for her hope chest. Wish I knew more.

  19. Patricia K. Luper on March 19, 2013 at 10:34 pm

  20. Louisa Lackey on March 19, 2013 at 11:52 pm

I love reading your books. You are an amazing writer and a good speaker. This is Louisa from Lib’s Place in Rice, VA. It was so nice of you to come to our store. We love quilting and having classes for beginning and more advanced quilters. We have beginning sewing as well and how fun to watch new sewers! Many turn into wonderful quilters. We will soon be starting our 4th year in business and in April we will take part in our second annual Shop Hop. Being in business these days is often a bit frightening but I still feel blessed each day. Thank you for your wonderful books.

    • Emilie Richards on March 20, 2013 at 8:46 am

Anybody near Rice, VA, run, don’t walk to Lib’s Place. I loved visiting this store, and the folks who run it are the best, Louisa.

  21. Harriet Campbell on March 20, 2013 at 12:42 pm

    • Emilie Richards on March 20, 2013 at 1:00 pm

I am so glad we have quilters, quilt appreciaters, and prospective quilters commenting. It’s such a delight to read everything you write. Thank you all. And I DO read them all.

  22. Cassandra Gore on March 20, 2013 at 12:43 pm

The Shenandoah Quilt series are one of my favorite series. The setting is very close to where I live which made it feel special. I learned a lot of history also.

  23. Wendy Jo Williams on March 20, 2013 at 12:45 pm

Time to reread this series I absolutely loved the books

  24. Margie Mijares on March 20, 2013 at 12:46 pm

Quilts are so special…the time that is devoted to each and every stitch that goes into one. My Aunt Zelma gave me my 1st quilt made just for me when I was 10 years old…that makes it 53 years old now. My son Alex loved to wrap himself in that love when he was very ill. My Mom and her 3 sisters made him one with Bugs Bunny that he treasured. I have several that were made by them and I treasure each one because 2 of the 4 sisters are now in a nursing home and unable to produce anymore..Quilts are stitched with love..one tiny stich at a time…just like lives are lived…minute by minute…true treasures!

  25. Arlene MacDonald on March 20, 2013 at 12:48 pm

I have created quilts for people that are dear to me. I see quilts as a warm hug on a cold night. Most of my children and grand-children live far away and I don’t get to see them very often so I hope my quilts keep them warm. I love your books!

  26. Cathy Norton on March 20, 2013 at 12:49 pm

I have the books on order from my supplier. Can’t wait to start selling them again.

    • Emilie Richards on March 20, 2013 at 12:59 pm

I am delighted your supplier is carrying them. I think you’ll like the covers.

  27. Renee on March 20, 2013 at 12:52 pm

I love your books and I love quilts. I don’t know how to quilt, but I would love to learn.

  28. Sharon Morris on March 20, 2013 at 1:01 pm

I am just about to start Sister’s Choice – I read Touching Stars last Autumn. Love the Shenandah Album series. I have relatives/ancestors from the area. PS, I’m a facebook fan/friend too. I’m about to try ‘tag’ you (well, one of your books which inadvertently made it) into one of my photos…

  29. Carol Deegan on March 20, 2013 at 1:03 pm

I loved the original books. I don’t make quilts, but have seen some beautiful quilts. They are such a labor of love.

  30. Cindy Dickinson on March 20, 2013 at 1:06 pm

I so loved these books, but I only have one of the pattern books. How did I let that happen? I would love to add this one to my bookshelf.

  31. Donna Meeks on March 20, 2013 at 1:14 pm

I have a handmade quilt from each of my sisters, and one from my grandmother. I will treasure them ALWAYS! I love the idea of quilting…but have only made a couple of baby quilts. I had the patience to teach Speciial Education for 32 years, but I don’t seem to have the patience to quilt! I still “see” a quilt in my future, so I guess I better get started.

  32. Holly Senecal on March 20, 2013 at 1:19 pm

I love your stories and have always wanted to learn how to quilt!

  33. DORIS GRILLON on March 20, 2013 at 1:26 pm

I love the entire Shenandoah Album Series, I love quilts but and not versed in making them I admire the works of others. I do crafts mostly jewelry making. I was hooked on your books from the first one I read Iron Lace. Can’t wait for the next book ….

  34. Janet Bowlin on March 20, 2013 at 1:34 pm

I love this series, have read all of them. My grandmother made us all 2 quilts while she was still alive, and I have 2 daughters to pass them on to. One of them is a Wedding Ring pattern and she used some fabric scraps from some dresses my mother and I sewed. This was back when home sewing was a normal thing to do!

  35. Dorothy Schreyer on March 20, 2013 at 1:58 pm

I LOVE the SHENANDOAH series, when I first discovered them I read Lover’s Knot and The Wedding Ring both on the same day (it was snowing out..so good time to read!) I would LOVE the pattern books!!!!!!!!

  36. Elaine Meyers on March 20, 2013 at 2:01 pm

The Shenandoah Album series was my introduction to your writings, Emilie, and since then I have read almost every book you have ever written (still working my way to the last few on my list). I am a quilter and love anything related to quilting so, of course, could relate to and loved the books. But non-quilters can and do love them just as much! Please keep the stories coming!!

  37. Jennifer Harper on March 20, 2013 at 2:04 pm

I have loved this series from day one. Even more so because I live in the Appalachian Mountains and am a third generation quilter. I look forward to the day when this series has more books to read!

  38. Rhonda on March 20, 2013 at 2:16 pm

I love your books. I am a quilter so they mean even mean more to me. I would be honored to win and add this to my collection.

  39. Debbie Hearne on March 20, 2013 at 2:36 pm

Love your books about women and friendships Emilie. The thought of a quilt brings a thought of comfort to me. I’ve never quilted though. Is it ever too late to learn?!!

  40. Judy on March 20, 2013 at 3:02 pm

I truly loved the Shenandoah Album series–especially since we live in No. VA and drive down route 81 past Toms Brook! I think that making a quilt for someone is a very personal experience–a lot of love goes into each quilt and it is a very personal expression of caring & “wrapping your arms around” someone you love.

  41. Shelley Shea on March 20, 2013 at 3:37 pm

I’m not sure how I missed that there is a quilt series by one of my favorite authors. I love the Ministry is Murder series, and have read many of your other books as well. I suppose I have lived overseas south as a military member and wife that I’m out of the loop on a lot if things! Thank goodness for Facebook!

I actually learned to quilt here in Okinawa, Japan many years ago during our last tour here. This will be our last trip, and I haven’t quilted in years. I’ve read other quilt series’ by Earlene Fowler and Jennifer Chiaverini, and I’m really looking forward to yours! I am not sure at all whether I am eligible for the contest. My address is considered US, but we have to get things through the USPS instead of UPS or FedEx. If not, it’s ok! I just wanted to let you know I love your books, and I’m so excited to have something new to read. Who knows, maybe I’ll get back to quilting. It’s a lot safer than Roller Derby which is my current passion! Lol. I’m going to see if these will be available on Nook. One thing about moving back and forth, is collecting a lot of extra weight is never a good thing. I struggle every move with getting rid of books, etc. :-). So excited!!!!

    • Emilie Richards on March 20, 2013 at 3:45 pm

You can certainly enter, and I am delighted you’ve found this series now. It would be fun to think of one of the books heading for Okinawa. (And yes, they will definitely be on the Nook.)

  42. Shelley Shea on March 20, 2013 at 3:40 pm

So sorry for the double post! I’m not sure how that happened! Maybe it’s because it’s 4:39 am here, and I’m still waking up! Lol

  43. Cheryl Rasmussen on March 20, 2013 at 4:28 pm

I loved this series and wish it would continue. I quilt and my quilting friends are like sisters. We have our trials and tribulations and quilting has helped us through good and bad, thick and thin and other things also. Isn’t that what “sisters” are for ? I have never had a blood sister but many crafty sisters

  44. LucyJoy on March 20, 2013 at 4:39 pm

I love the Shenandoah series. Such wonderful, heartwarming stories & I’m not a quilter!

  45. Shanna on March 20, 2013 at 5:25 pm

I love the quilting books and quilting! Although, I tend to quilt for awhile and give up then start again in a month.I always love curling up with a good book.

  48. Pat Pollock on March 20, 2013 at 6:32 pm

Quilts are sanity. When life is rough or stressful, quilts give us a creative path to beauty and serenity. I cannot get enough of quilts or quilt books, especially yours!

  49. Joan Hudson on March 20, 2013 at 7:06 pm

I have read all of the Shenandoah books when they first came out and have been waiting patiently for more to the series. I’ve been quilting since 1998 and love fabrics. Hope you knee is better. I have had both replaced.

  50. Lynne on March 20, 2013 at 10:52 pm

I love the novels and usually can’t put them down till finished. The quilting element draws me in to the books even more and the characters become real to me. Quilting for me, is about my family. I have made two landscape quilts for my parents. The first is a wall hanging to symbolize many of the places they visited on a cross Canada tour. The second for their bed, is a picture of the land and water scape they view from their house – Sechelt Inlet on the Sunshine Coast, BC. When I read your novels I get inspired to shop for more colourful blocks and plan my next project.

  51. Kristy on March 20, 2013 at 11:37 pm

I love most everything about quilts – from picking out the fabric and pattern to looking at an old quilt my grandmother made and trying to pick out fabric from the clothes she used to wear.

  52. Cara on March 21, 2013 at 12:37 am

My aunt loves your book and is also a quilter! Love the idea.

  53. Kristine E. on March 21, 2013 at 11:35 am

I have never made a quilt but I’m trying to learn. This book looks great 🙂

  54. Sue G. on March 23, 2013 at 9:08 pm

Love your books but I am a big fan of your Shanandoah series. This series has inspired me to create a story book quilt. What I do is create a block from a strong presence in the story. Thank you for giving me the inspiration to get creative with other books as well.

  55. Shawn G on March 24, 2013 at 6:12 pm

I love the Shenandoah series! I have read all the books more than once, and even have a few of the quilt along books as well! I have also made a couple of the pattern-Endless Chain and Clay’s Choice! I would love a new book in the series!

  56. Dee Winter on March 26, 2013 at 7:47 pm

I’m a quilter. I love the feel of the fabric the colors the opportunity to create. I’ve gifted my quilts, I’ve been gifted by my friends. I have ones I’ll never part with, I’ve parted with ones that I loved for people I loved. I’ve even admitted that the t-shirt quilt I was laying out, “spoke” to me. It told me where the important shirts belonged – oh maybe it was the brother in law who loved the shirts. Love your books always!

  57. Tina Huneycutt on March 27, 2013 at 7:42 pm

Oh Emilie, I love quilting. It started as a way to pass time after I changed jobs and was no longer tied to the workplace. It is now pure therapy. I even enjoy reorganizaing my fabric closet!

For years, I have had a quilt top that my grandmother made. It still needs borders and even has a few stains. And this year I am going to finish it. I have two other quilts made by my grandmother; however, this one will be special because even though she has been gone for 15 years, the two of us will have made this. The stories a quilt can tell…

The Shenandoah series has been on my list to read and I’m starting this week. Love your books!

  58. Janet Estridge on March 29, 2013 at 10:25 pm

I’ve never read the series but look forward to doing so. I have received several quilts from family members. I know that each and every stitch was sewn with love & lots of patience.
Thanks for entering me in your giveaway.

  59. Erin Hutchinson on April 2, 2013 at 8:18 am

I own your entire series (plus the Ministry is Murder books – love those, too!), and would love the patterns to go along with them. I quilt to bring comfort to others, but also to bring comfort to myself. There is so much in life that we can’t control – but I can make a beautiful pattern emerge from my own hands. And when I am stressed, there is nothing that calms me down faster than picking up needle and thread and hand quilting.

    • Emilie Richards on April 2, 2013 at 9:34 am

Thanks to all you new commenters. I love hearing about your connections to the books and to quilts of all kinds.

  60. Cathy Fennell on April 2, 2013 at 8:23 am

I love these books!!!! I have reread them several times. I hope you will reconsider and add another to the series. I would love to have the quilt instruction books to add to my collection.
    All the best,
    Cathy Fennell

My mother is retired and loves to read your books. This would be a nice collection for her this summer even if I don’t get lucky and have my name drawn.

  62. Jan Knabel on April 2, 2013 at 8:28 am

I have read every book! Love them and recommend them to all my quilting friends. I have been waiting and waiting for a new book! I am glad to hear a new one may be released! Friendships with women are special and your books truly bring that out!

I had the priviledge to meet you once at Kate and Becca’s Quilt Shop in Scottsville, Pa. Had a lot of fun and became a fan of your books. Keep them coming!!!

  66. Lynn S on April 2, 2013 at 8:50 am

I have read every book in this series and can’t wait for the 6th book! One of the things that drew me to the series is the quilting-theme. I met you at one of the Houston Quilt festivals and commented on how your understanding of emotions, just jumps off the pages. It would be a special treasure to receive one of the quilt pattern books.

  67. Jean DeFrances on April 2, 2013 at 8:51 am

I’ve read all the books in the Shenandoah series and look forward to more. I’m a quilter and would be pleased to own one of the pattern books from Leisure Arts.

I have had a love for quilts since I was a child. I made my first quilt when I was thirteen. I now have my own quilting studio and do longarm quilting for others too.
I love stories that tie quilts into them as yours does.
    Thank you for the give~away.

  70. Nancy on April 2, 2013 at 9:26 am

We read Lovers Knot in our book club I like the book that I read the whole series and really enjoyed them. I bought one of the pattern books and loaned it to someone and cannot remember who and they have never returned it. I am looking for to June for the new book

  71. Jennifer Kramer on April 2, 2013 at 9:27 am

I loved the Shenandoah series!! As an avid quilter I really enjoyed the books. I had a hard time putting the books down because I always wanted to know what was going to happen next and how each chosen quilt would work it’s way into the story and change the characters lives.

  72. DellMartinez on April 2, 2013 at 9:31 am

I am a quiter and an avid reader. So winning this giveaway is a win-win for me. I especailly love books in a series. I want to know “What happened then…?” Thanks for the opportunity!

  73. Pam Reed on April 2, 2013 at 9:44 am

My mother has been gone for over 20 years and I still have all the pieces of a quilt she had finished cutting, but never put together. Because I didn’t like the colors and how she had told me she was going to put it together (black feather stitching?) – I never did anything with it. Now you have given me the desire to get all the pieces out and see what I can do to put this quilt together so that I not only have a quilt from my mother, but one that fits into my tastes. Regarding your re-issues. I absolutely love series – it just keeps me in the moment of all the wonderful characters you bring to life!

  74. Cheryl English on April 2, 2013 at 9:46 am

This series sounds phenomenal. Such a decent giveaway for your fans. Thank You.

  75. Kathy Marx on April 2, 2013 at 9:48 am

Loved that series – didn’t read them all so now I have the opportunity to start at the beginning and go for it! I also attended the Road to California quilt show about ten years ago and heard you speak about your craft of writing and how you incorporated quilting into this series. I really enjoyed your presentation – thanks then and now!

  76. Bobbie Lukacs on April 2, 2013 at 9:56 am

I love the Shenandoah Album series and am so hopeful that more books will be forthcoming. I quilt constantly and am always looking for the next challenge. I am so grateful that I took up quilting at the encouragement of a griend of mine (she actually signed me up for a class and told me about it right before the class started!) I am so thankful for that experience and learning as much as I have about quilting. God has blessed me with so many wonderful friends that I have met through quilting. Quilting and these friendships are better than any kind of therapy!

  77. Gay Slade on April 2, 2013 at 10:05 am

Have collected and read the Shenandoah Series. I am a quilter and hoping the series will continue. I grew up near the Shenandoah region and love reconnecting through this series of wonderful reading.

  78. judy on April 2, 2013 at 10:06 am

I love to quilt. Have 4 quilts that need the binding sewed on. Just s soon as my left hand gets better. Have material for about 30 more quilts, so I need to get busy. Your books will be a joy to read, will look for them in the store.

  79. Diane Lueske on April 2, 2013 at 10:07 am

Emily I am a big fan of the Shenandoah series. I became a fan of your writing when I bought Lovers Knot. I buy all your books and receive your newsletter so I know when you have a new book coming out. Being a quilter I especially enjoy the books about quilting and women who quilt. I really enjoy your insight into how women think and feel.
    Thank you for that.

  80. Penny Prichard on April 2, 2013 at 10:26 am

I loved these books – as I love all of Emilie’s books. Not only did I love getting to know the characters in the books I was inspired to design my own Christmas quilt. So glad other folks will be able to read them now that they are in paperback.

  81. Tana Lewis on April 2, 2013 at 10:32 am

I love this series of books and I am a new quilter, well, not really new, but have only been quilting since 2006 after I read your series and another authors series. The books gave me the extra push I needed to find a hobby that I really enjoyed and I really enjoy it. Just ask my husband. He says it is taking over the house. lol It isn’t, but I do have bits and pieces in every room. Can’t wait to win a book…..
    Smiles….

  82. Sandy Spence on April 2, 2013 at 10:36 am

I love this series…I quilt and love all quilts. I think my favorite book in the series was Touching Stars. It was so moving.
I pass your books on to my sister and Mom to read, and they enjoy them as much as I do. I need to go back and read them again 🙂

  83. Darla on April 2, 2013 at 10:41 am

Quilting is one of my two addictions. The other is reading and when the two converge I am in heaven. Thanks for bringing the two together.

  84. Adelyn Grudier on April 2, 2013 at 10:44 am

Reading a novel that features “real people” who walk, talk and act like real people is always a joy. I’ve read every one of the series, so far, and it always leaves me wanting for more. It’s hard to wait for the next book to come out.
Instead of always leaving us laughing you always leave us wanting for more, Emilie.

  87. Diane Carrillo on April 2, 2013 at 11:17 am

The Shenandoah series is a favorite of mine. I enjoy reading and re-reading these books. I am eager to read the new book when it is published.

  88. Cathy Bondi on April 2, 2013 at 11:30 am

I loved the books when they first came out and am happy to see they’re returning! It’s so refreshing to read something thats not filled with sex and rough language and the quilting part is a huge bonus! I just love the connections the quilts have with their owners lives. Thank you!!!

  89. Lisa McCracken on April 2, 2013 at 11:35 am

I am so excited to see this series coming back out. The first time I read them my family got nothing but sandwich’s for supper for 2 weeks. I couldn’t put them down. The house cleaning and laudry washing got done with the book in my hand. Thanks for writing such wonderful books.

  90. Patti Levine on April 2, 2013 at 12:05 pm

I haven’t taken the time to read through all the other comments. I came to this series by looking for quilt related books, but have fallen in love with them for so many other reasons. I have gotten lots of my friends to read them too as they speak to so many women.

  97. Naomi J. Brooks on April 2, 2013 at 2:45 pm

I have read the books about quilts and quilting and loved all of them. I am a quilter and so I understood the stories.

  98. marie b. on April 2, 2013 at 3:05 pm

though there are several “quilt” themed books out there these days. the Shenandoah Album series is far and away the best. I loved each and every character. It’s so good to hear that we will all get to meed these people again.
As a quilter, I loved the way that quilts were showcased in such a realistic way-not every quilt is a masterpiece….at least not at my house!

  99. Sherrill Heinlein on April 2, 2013 at 3:21 pm

I love your books and I would love to have the quilt patterns

  100. Vanessa Webster on April 2, 2013 at 3:31 pm

  102. Noelle the dreamer on April 2, 2013 at 4:18 pm

Emilie, the first time I realized the ‘history’ behind a quilt was after reading an article about the underground railroad in the US. I was hooked and loved them since for these stories as well as for their colours and intricate patterns. No, I am not a quilter but our library would be thrilled at such a gift so kindly add my name in the hat.
Always enjoying your novels and many thanks for the lovely opportunity!
    Blessings,

  106. MARY MCLAIN on April 2, 2013 at 5:27 pm

I like quilts and have several quilts that I made. Quilts remind me of my grandparents, are a good way to recycle cloth scraps from sewing projects, and provide warmth and comfort.

  107. Donna Leimeister on April 2, 2013 at 5:35 pm

I have read every book written by Emilie Richards and have loved them all. I also have met Emilie Richards numerous times at the Buckeye Book Fair. It was an honor and a pleasure.

Thank you for writing such enjoyable books.

  108. Daisy Christopherson on April 2, 2013 at 6:17 pm

    Emilie,

I am a huge fan of yours and have been looking around for copies of this series with no luck so I am glad to see that the first 3 are coming out again. I am also a quilter which is primarily why I picked up the first book and fell in love with the charactors and our writing. Thanks for a chance to win the quilt books. Daisy

  109. Brenda Howard on April 2, 2013 at 7:12 pm

I fell in love with your writing when you did the quilt-a-long with Pat Sloan and have been hooked every since. Keep up the super fantastic work.

I have loved every one of your books. Even though I am a long time quilter I do not own any of the quilting book with patterns from your books. I can hardly wait for the new series.

  113. Julie Vanderheide on April 2, 2013 at 9:02 pm

How exciting to hear that the Shenandoah Album series will be reissued. They are such great books! Quilts are such an important part of American history. I have been blessed with a quilt from my mother, grandmother, great grandmother and great aunts. They hold a special place in my heart and my home as do the Shenandoah Album books. Thank you Emilie for sharing your talent with us.

  114. Theresa N on April 2, 2013 at 9:20 pm

I’ve made 1 quit by myself and helped with 2 others, I’m hopeing this summer to make another. To me quilts are beautiful and it’s thrilling to pick the pattern and fabrics and in the end have something you can use for years.

  115. Glenda Tron on April 2, 2013 at 10:10 pm

I have read three and thoroughly enjoyed them. I will be checking out the companion quilt pattern books. I’m looking forward to reading more. Thanks.

  116. Kai W. on April 2, 2013 at 10:28 pm

I have been quilting since I was little. One of the main reasons is that when my parents immigrated to the U.S., we didn’t have much money. For me to ask my parents for a new blanket was a burden I didn’t want to be. I ended up quilting my own blanket from fabrics that my Mom’s work place didn’t want (my mom is a seamstress). I still continue to quilt even though I don’t need to.

    • Emilie Richards on April 3, 2013 at 10:34 am

That’s a wonderful story, Kai, and yes, definitely an incentive. We forget sometimes that quilting started out as a necessity, not a luxury, and some of the most wonderful quilts got a lot of use in their day.

  117. Cathy Cameron on April 2, 2013 at 10:42 pm

I have many of your books in my quilt library..be it a novel or an actual quilt book. Have been trying to get all but must do so slowly as now on a pension. I mention your books to all my quilting friends.
I make quilts because I can creat/design something special for friends and family. Finally starting to think about making some for me!!
Thanks Emilie for a chance to win one..fantastic.

  118. Linda Salivar on April 2, 2013 at 11:12 pm

I am an aspiring quilter and an avid reader! I love to read books about quilts interwoven with the quilters’ stories AND I LOVE your books. I was introduced to your writing when I was driving home to New Mexico from Northern Illinois. I stopped in the Amana Colony in Iowa. I try to visit quilt stores when I get the chance to travel. The store had several copies of your book “Endless Chain.” I bought it without reading any pages. I just knew it would be good! It was great and I was immediately hooked!! I then began to acquire all your books and told all my friends about them!

I am a paralegal in a small but extremely busy law firm. While I have done a little quilting, I would like to do much more but simply cannot with my demanding job. My hope is that when I can semi-retire and work part-time, I will be able to focus on quilting. In the meantime, I have started a wonderful collection of fabrics and I read your books to relax and “escape” some of the pressure! Thank you.

    • Emilie Richards on April 3, 2013 at 10:33 am

Watch out, Linda. Collecting fabrics is more than half the fun and as addictive as salted peanuts. You could start with a simple hand applique project to do in the evenings with TV. But whenever you start, I know you’re going to love it.

  119. Susan Driskill on April 2, 2013 at 11:21 pm

Hooray! Great prizes that do double duty with quilters & readers!! My quilting bee spends almost as much time swapping great reads as they do quilting. This would be a much appreciated, greatly valued prize. Thank for for offering so much!

  120. Jean Jones on April 3, 2013 at 12:32 am

I so enjoyed meeting you at the AQS Quilt Show in Paducah a number of years ago. Your books grab me from the first chapter and just won’t let go until I read to the end. However, as I get closer to the end, I feel sad since my vacation is about to conclude. Thank you for taking me on a beautiful mental holiday. .

  121. Mary Burn on April 3, 2013 at 9:59 am

I just love all your books. I am in three quilting groups and this book will be perfect. Thanks for including me in your giveaway.

  122. Emilie Richards on April 3, 2013 at 10:39 am

Big thanks to all of you for your wonderful stories and comments. It’s my big treat every day to read and enjoy what you’re said.

  123. Betty Greene on April 3, 2013 at 11:48 am

I am so excited about the first three books in the Shenandoah Series being reprinted. Those were the first books written by you that I read and only because they were about quilts. There is just something about quilts and fabrics that are calming, beautiful and something extra special to make and give away! Thanks for your wonderful books that you have the talent to write.

  124. Cheryl Jacaman on April 3, 2013 at 3:44 pm

I read your Message #43 to Kai regarding quilts starting out as a necessity. It brought back a dear memory of spending many nights talking to my great-grandmother, whom I absolutely adored, in her little bedroom while watching her brush her very long hair. She had a handmade quilt that I would curl up in during our “conversations” (I was about five or six years old at the time). When she died, the quilt was sent to me in Alaska, per her request, where my family had moved a few years prior. I absolutely loved that quilt & used it for many years out of necessity due to the extreme winter cold in our house. How I wish that I still had that wonderful quilt, but it ended up falling apart after all those years of use! Thank you for the treasured memory and for the great set of books that are in the Shenandoah Album series!

    • Emilie Richards on April 3, 2013 at 3:48 pm

I know your grandmother would have much preferred you use and love the quilt than pack it away for safekeeping. Thanks for sharing your story.

  125. Sandy K on April 3, 2013 at 7:34 pm

I am a quilter and love quilts. I also would love to win a copy of this book and plan on starting to read all of the Shenandoah Series. I am waiting for the second book of the Godesses. Thanks for sharing.

I have 3 passions: writing, quilting and reading. I love the Shenandoah Album series. I appreciated your email to me several years ago encouraging me to continue writing and quilting. The pattern book would give me and my guild members more inspiration and ideas on making comfort quilts for those in need. Thanks for being an inspiration to many.

  130. ArJean myers on April 4, 2013 at 1:35 am

My first quilt was a sampler. I’ve had a three foot decal placed on the back of our motor home of the log cabin block from my quilt. If you see a Minnie Winnie driving down the highways with this decal on the back wave. The idea behind this decal was to duplicate the “barn quilts” but make mine portable. Cost was just over one hundred dollars and people say it looks like I have a piece of fabric hanging on the MH. Whenever I look at the block I keep trying to correct my fabric choices (some errors in color placement). The original quilt is to be draped on me casket when I pass on.

  131. Jackie Wisherd on April 4, 2013 at 1:55 am

I am a quilter and a reader. I have been taking quilting classes for the last six years.I already knew how to sew but for me it has been picking colors and putting them together that has been so satisfying.I have quite a collection to pass on to my grandkids.

  132. Louise Sulack on April 4, 2013 at 8:58 am

I love reading any books about quilting. Your books Shenandoah Album Series – Wedding Ring, Endless Chain, Lover’s Knot, Touching Stars, and Sister’s Choice are my very favorites that I own, and I have read each more that two or three times each! When I am not reading, I have a home business where I quilt and sell some at craft shows. I would very much like to be in your giveaway. Thank you!

  138. Holly Senecal on April 24, 2013 at 3:48 pm

I am a new quilter and was inspired to start by the Shenandoah series… I love to read and creating things in different art forms is another passion. Quilts can be another form of story telling and I am excited to learn how to do that. Starting small but looking forward to every stitch!

  139. Amy Rochelle on April 24, 2013 at 10:54 pm

Quilts for me are more than something that provides warmth. They are art. They are a connection to my past. Making them is therapy. They are connection to kindred spirits. Creating them feeds my soul and grounds me. I could go on and on.
