Let There Be Suspects
Recipes

The Wilcox family holiday gets sidetracked by a murder, but Aggie and Ed make certain the girls still have their traditional Christmas morning, including their favorite cranberry bread. Christmas just isn’t Christmas without it, and not for the author, either. It’s a tradition in my home to forget the sugar. This is one tradition best forgotten; note the capitals in the directions.

Christmas Cranberry-Orange Nut Loaf

2 c. flour, sifted
1 c. SUGAR
1 ½ t. baking powder
½ t. soda
½ t. salt
1/4 cup (1/2 stick) softened butter
3/4 cup orange juice
1 T grated orange rind
1 egg well beaten
½ c. nuts, chopped
1 c. fresh cranberries, coarsely chopped

Sift together flour, SUGAR, baking powder, soda and salt; cut in butter until mixture resembles coarse cornmeal. Combine orange juice and rind with egg. Pour all at once, into dry ingredients, mixing just enough to dampen. Carefully fold in nuts and cranberries. Spoon into greased 9x5x3" loaf pan; mound corners and sides slightly higher than center.

Bake at 350 for 1 hour or until crust is golden brown and toothpick (straight from Aggie’s collection of toothpick holders) comes out clean. Remove from pan. Cool. Store overnight for easy slicing.

Makes 1 loaf

**Variation: Use a 10 oz container of frozen cranberry orange sauce instead of the cranberries and orange rind and 1/4 cup of the sugar.
