Let It Snow? That’s a No! Blizzard 2015.

If you’re reading this today you have power.

Blizzard 2015Yay you! I’m thrilled for you. Still I know that your thoughts are with all the people on the east coast who probably don’t have power, heat or warm water today. We’re wishing them the best, right?

For those of you immersed in blizzard 2015 who are lucky enough to be able to turn on your computer? I thought I might entertain you with just a bit with blizzard lore. Maybe you’d rather read about sunny climes right now, but sometimes misery loves company. So for your entertainment (?) here are some tidbits I found for you:

The Chicago Blizzard of 1967 details a blizzard that could possibly have been worse than this one. And apparently hundreds of school children thought it was great fun. Sound like fun to you?

Of course Chicago’s not the only town with blizzard history. Denver has blizzards, too. Read about one from a child’s perspective.

Want something a little juicier? Here’s a true story about a New York politician, a sex scandal and the  blizzard of 1888.

Do you have blizzard stories yourself? We’d like to hear them. Any blizzard past or present.

Lighten up you say? Well, those were the “lightest” blizzard stories I could find. But okay, let’s try a few jokes. These are adapted from the website Jokes4Us.com.

Can you tell me what an “ig” is? Of course I can. An ig is an ice house without a “loo.”

Know any Gangsta Snowmen? There’s always Froze-T.

Seen any Snowmen with six packs? You  missed the best one. The abdominal snowman just breezed by.

I can’t start my car to go to work. Got any ideas? Sure, you can always go by icicle.

Please, enough of that, yes?

How about an explanation of the word “blizzard.” Here’s a piece written for students studying English as a second language. Did you ever think about all the idioms that contain the word “snow?” Now you will.

And finally, here’s one thing most of us will never have to face. Five stories about moms giving birth during blizzards.

Come to think of it I wrote a story about a character give birth during a blizzard. Yep, I did. Do you know that book? First person in the U.S. or Canada who gets the title right will receive an autographed novel. So put on your thinking cap. Leave a comment on this blog (not on Goodreads, please but right here) with your answer.

For the record, no purchase is necessary. Search carefully and you can find the answer in reviews of this particular story. Good luck.

Put on your winter cap, too, and please, please stay inside and stay warm.

Blizzard 2015, be gone.

I’m rooting for all of you.

UPDATE: Two readers correctly answered Endless Chain as an Emilie Richards novel with a blizzard birth. But guess what? There’s a second! (An older book.) So guess again for another chance at an autographed novel. And truly, if you think of a third novel I wrote with that scenario? I’ll begin to worry.

My family and I got stranded in Colorado in the big snow storm around 2005 or so. We had five of us in two hotel rooms for five days before we could get another flight out. We got pizza right before they closed everything down and kept the boxes against the windows to keep it cold till the next day. There was about three feet of snow.

Good going, Shawn. That’s one of the TWO books I wrote with a baby delivery during a blizzard. And quite honestly not the one I first thought of. So you’ll get an autographed novel. Just contact me through my website and we’ll talk about what you would like to have. And congratulations.

Giving birth during a blizzard? That would be Tessa in Enfless Chain.

I was in PA visiting friends for the weekend. I live in Canada and we get some terrific storms. But this particular weekend, we got caught in a blizzard that left 8-10 ft snowdrifts. It was a wild weekend.. Whiteouts and drifting snow do not make for good driving conditions. I was glad by the time we left on Sunday that the roads were clear to make the drive home.

Blizzard stories, BRRRR. . . Thank you for sharing. And thanks to both Shawn and Kay who answered correctly that Endless Chain has a blizzard birth.

But guess what? There’s another! So put on your thinking caps for a second try, okay? Another autographed novel for that winner, too.
