Happiness is a Sunny Day and Cherry Blossoms

Cherry Blossoms and sky.jpg

I bet that you have a festival in your hometown, some time during the year when you celebrate just for the fun of it with your friends and neighbors.  This year, why not take the time to go?  If it’s Mardi Gras in New Orleans or Buzzard Day in Hinckley, Ohio, turn off the computer or the television set, grab a camera, a kid or a dog and enjoy.

Emilie, Nemo and Cherry Blossoms.jpgWashington DC has its world famous Cherry Blossom Festival, of course.  But Kenmore, a neighborhood in Bethesda, Maryland, gives the DC Tidal Basin a run for its cherry blossom appeal.  Plus it’s easier to park, and the traffic’s possible to negotiate.

Today Michael, Nemo and I went to Kenmore for our afternoon walk.  That cloud behind us is actually a cloud of blossoms stretching from one side of the street to the other.

We weren’t the only ones enjoying this rare sunny day.  Everyone else had waited for the right moment to see the blossoms, too, and the streets were crowded with lemonade stands, Girl Scouts selling cookies, families eating picnics and tourists with cameras.

Cherry Blossoms on the Median.jpgIn just a matter of days the entire DC area has burst into spring.  Daffodils, creeping phlox and grape hyacinth fill garden beds.  Japanese magnolias, cherry trees, and Bradford pears decorate almost every yard.

Happiness is enjoying the gifts all around me.  I’m glad I  turned off my computer and my usual routine and celebrated spring instead.

I hope you’ll find a way to celebrate, as well.

Our town is in the middle of the Man From Snowy River festival. I can’t say have got into the spirit of it. I did look at the stalls set out in the street. I gave two of my girls some money and one bought a kite.

Linda, you went, you shopped for something fun. That sounds like a good start. Wish I were there, since I know this HAS to be in Australia, one of my very favorite places.

What a wonderful review. And thanks for recommending it when the paperback comes out in June.
