Sunday Inspiration: Giving Tuesday

Giving Tuesday

“It’s not how much we give but how much love we put into giving.” – Mother Teresa

“We make a living by what we get. We make a life by what we give.” – Winston Churchill

I share these two quotes in honor of The National Day of Giving — or Giving Tuesday which is November 29th this year — to remind all of us that generosity is at the heart of happiness and joy.

This time of year Michael and I enjoy giving gifts to family and friends, but next week we will be writing checks to worthy charities we believe are making a real difference in the world.

I like to think we give, not out of guilt or pity, but from a genuine compassion for those in need. I like to remind myself that so many of the good things in my life weren’t earned but simply gifts. By the same token, so many people who desperately need help weren’t as lucky as I have been. And they, too, deserve all the good things I have.

Consider your gifts wisely. Charity Navigator is one place we can check to be sure the charities we’ve chosen spend our money carefully, focusing on the things that matter most to us and not simply on fundraising or administration. I like to check annually, to be sure I understand and approve of new directions, if any.

Happy Giving Tuesday friends!
